Choosing a mural for your home involves more than deciding which image you like. The distance from which you see the wall each day, the furniture in front of it and the room's light all affect the design.

Artwork for a living room, study corner or dining area should relate to how you live. A composition you admire in another home can look very different in your space, even at the same size and in the same colours.

Do you choose the subject or the wall first? If you have an idea, assess it alongside a suitable surface. If the subject is still open, the wall itself can provide a starting point.

A television wall, dining area and entrance serve different purposes. Look at whether screens, paintings, shelves or doors interrupt the view. If several rooms are involved, define the role of each one separately.

Does a small room require a simple design? Room size alone does not determine the approach. Consider the artwork's scale, colours and surrounding empty space together.

A restrained drawing or a strong portrait could both suit a particular room. Reviewing visual proposals is more useful than promising that a pattern will definitely make the room look larger. Discuss the intended effect during the design presentation.

What if the furniture changes later? A tall cupboard or shelf could hide a significant part of the mural. Mention any planned furniture changes at the start.

Building a composition around a particular sofa and designing a more independent wall treatment are different choices. Separating fixed and changeable elements clarifies which arrangement the design is intended to support.

How does a personal reference become original artwork? Nature, travel, portraiture or abstract forms can all provide a starting point. Explain which colours, lines or atmosphere appeal to you in your references.

Develop an interpretation for your own space instead of copying a reference image exactly. If a portrait or another artwork is involved, consider the relevant rights and permissions separately.

What needs discussing before work begins at home? Assess the wall's condition, protection for belongings and access to the area. Once products and methods have been selected, confirm their use and re-entry requirements. A firm schedule should not be given before assessment.
