Taking a portrait onto a wall can require more than enlarging a photograph. The face’s framing, surrounding forms and the wall’s role in the space need to be considered together.
Explain which image you chose and why. An emotion, direction of gaze, colour or compositional preference can provide a starting point. Confirm whether the reference can be used separately.
How should a reference photograph be chosen? Details and lighting help the design discussion, but high resolution does not establish usage rights. Clarify permissions relating to the photographer, image source and person depicted.
Do not assume that a celebrity or existing portrait is automatically suitable. An original figure or an approach not based on a real person is another option. Agree which image the project will use before application begins.
How does framing relate to the wall? Doors, shelves, furniture and viewing distance affect the composition. Important portrait features should not fall on a divided or concealed part of the wall.
Centring the face is not the only option. Consider the gaze and surrounding empty space alongside the layout. Assess several viewpoints rather than assuming one presentation shows the whole spatial effect.
Must the photograph’s colours be retained? A realistic, geometric or freer interpretation can be considered. Choose the palette and level of detail according to the space and intended expression.
In Graffiti Ankara’s Pizza Sapore project, the portrait was combined with layered forms and colour accents. At Ayaküstü Kahve, vivid colours and free lines accompanied a black-and-white portrait. These examples show different interpretations of the same subject, without claiming commercial results.
What should be checked at approval? Approve the reference, framing, proportions, colour approach and placement together. Switching to another photograph later can change the composition.
Clarify the surface, access and application scope separately. Share your reference, wall photographs and approximate dimensions on WhatsApp. Discuss your portrait mural idea with Graffiti Ankara.
